Founded in December 2001, the School of Foreign Languages Studies is a college that cultivates foreign language major talents and provides foreign language teaching for undergraduate, master's and doctoral students from the majors other than languages. The college began to recruit undergraduates majoring in English in 2000 (the English Department of the College of Humanities) and Japanese in 2006. At present, there are 638 undergraduates majoring in English and Japanese and 86 postgraduates.

The college has nearly 100 teaching staff and nearly 40 teachers with the academic titles of professors and associate professors. Among the full-time teachers, more than 60% have overseas learning and exchange experience, with one distinguished professor (Qianjiang Scholar) of Zhejiang Province, one Zhejiang New Century 151 Talent Project professor, and two professors selected for the “521” top talent and backbone talent respectively. The college also has foreign teachers from the United States, Britain, Japan and other countries.

The college has 5 teaching departments (departments), 5 research institutes, 3 offices, 3 education and teaching centers, 1 library. The five teaching departments (Department) are: the English Department, the Japanese Department, the College English Teaching Department I, the College English Teaching Department II, and the Graduate English Teaching Department. The five research institutes are: the Institute of linguistics, the Institute of Applied Linguistics, the Institute of Foreign Literature, the Institute of Translation and the Institute of Japanese Studies. The three offices are: the general office, the teaching and scientific research office and the student affairs office. The three education and teaching centers are: MTI Education Center for master of translation, the disciplinary contest and teaching development center, and the foreign language lab.

The college has made fruitful scientific research achievements in disciplines, and has the certification to grant the master’s degree in first-class disciplines of foreign languages and literature and to grant the master’s degree in translation. In the past five years, there have been 22 scientific research projects of high level, including 1 major national social science project, 13 national scientific research projects, 1 national curriculum construction project, 4 provincial and ministerial curriculum construction projects and 15 provincial and ministerial educational reform research projects. English major was listed as the key major in Zhejiang Province in 2009, the first-class national construction major in 2021, and College English was listed as the third batch of College English teaching reform demonstration sites of the Ministry of Education in 2011.

The college has made remarkable achievements in talent training. Many students have obtained excellent results in the “FLTRP Cup” National College Students’ English speech and writing competition and won one national special prize in the English public speaking contest. In 2020, the results of the ‘FLTRP Cup’ English speaking and writing contests ranked second among provincial universities, including 4 national second prizes and 1 third prize, and the total number of awards reached a record high. In addition, students have made remarkable achievements in the National English Contest, National College English Contest, Japanese International Translation Contest, the Provincial Occupation Career Planning Contest and the Provincial Internet Plus Contest. The employment rate of graduates has been stable (more than 95%), and the further study rate of undergraduate graduates is high (nearly 30% in 2020). A great number of graduates have entered famous universities at home and abroad, such as Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Renmin University of China, Shanghai Foreign Studies University, New York University, University of Edinburgh, and so on.
