School-opening Ceremony & Welcome Party for the freshmen of 2014 was held in the university’s gymnasium on the evening of September 16th. Present at the ceremony were the university’s leaders, including Mr. Wu Fengmin (Party Secretary ), Mr. Qiu Songliang (President), Ms. Jin Jinru (Assistant Party Secretary), Mr. Chen Jianyong (Vice-President), Mr. Chen Wenxing (Vice-President), Mr. Gao Zhengrong (Vice-President), Mr. Zhou Wenlong (member of the university’s CPC Committee & Director of the Organization Department), Ms, Du Lanxiao (member of the CPC Committee & Director of the Publicity Department), as well as the heads of different Schools, representatives of the seniors and the alumni. It was presided over by Mr. Cheng Gang (Assistant Party Secretary).
First, Chen Wenxing read the 2014 freshman scholarship roll list and the overseas student scholarship list. Leaders at the rostrum presented the awards to the winners.
Then the speakers on behalf of the faculty, the seniors, the freshmen, and the alumni delivered speeches respectively.Professor Wang Yaming, Dean of theSchool of Informatics & Electronics emphasized ethics development, character building and knowledge acquisition in his speech. He encouraged the students to learn efficiently, to reflect on, and to use what they have learnt Fang Xiang, a senior from theSchool of Law and Politics and the Acting President of Zhejiang Provincial Students’ Federation shared his experiences of life and study at ZSTU. He called on the freshmen to make a career plan as soon as possible, use time wisely and be always ready to learn.
Huang Wenhui, a freshman from Qi Xin School and a scholarship winner, promised that the freshmen would work hard and live up to the expectations of their parents and teachers. She said as the new members of this big family, they would carry on its good tradition, shoulder its social responsibility and be part of its bright future.
Speaking on behalf of the alumni was Tang Ming who graduated in 1997 and now is a senior economist and the head of ICBC’s Wulin Branch. He recalled his life at ZSTU with passion and shared his life wisdom with the freshmen, which could be summarized as knowing yourself and setting reasonable goals, learning more outside the textbooks, taking part in social activities and staying positive. He promised that ZSTU’s 120,000 alumni would always be willing to lend a helping hand to the freshmen.
The opening ceremony concluded with a speech from President Qiu. He extended his congratulations and welcome to the first year students and introduced to them the university’s motto and its educational philosophy. He hoped the students would uphold patriotism, professionalism, friendliness, and credibility. He called on the students to have lofty ideals and commit them to serving the country. He asked the students to be prudent and down-to-earth. He emphasized the importance of safety, hoping the students would be healthy both physically and mentally. At last, he hoped that all the students would enjoy their life at ZSTU and developed themselves to be the role models for the society, and the outstanding talents for the country.
After the opening ceremony, the Welcome Party began with a songThe Story of Timeperformed by the university’s art troupe which immediately ignited the audience’s passion. Then different campus clubs dazzled the newcomers with aerobics,taekwondo, martial arts, magic, COSPLAY, and street dance. The overseas students at ZSTU presented different versions of the Chinese hit songThe Little Appleand African-flavor rich songThe Lion King. At last the university song sung by Professor Jin Yongling brought the party to a climax.
