President Qiu Songliang Visited Three Universities in
America and
Canada with His Delegation


At the invitation of the presidents of Kansas State University of America,State University of New York at Oswego (SUNY-Oswego), and University of Quebec at Abitibi-Temiscamingue (UQAT) of Canada, ZSTU president Qiu Songliang visited the three universities with his delegation from March 11thto 20th. The delegation held comprehensive and in-depth communication with the three universities with regard to student exchanges, joint educating program, exchange of teachers and visiting scholars, and cooperative research. The
delegation signed a memorandum of cooperation with Kansas State University and UQAT.

From March 12thto 13th,the delegation visited Kansas State University, which is located in the middle of America. It got hospitable reception from the university president Kirk Schulz, senior vice president April Mason, associate director of International Affairs Office Marcelo Sabates, dean of College of Human Ecology Virginia Moxley, dean of College of Engineering associate Noel Schulz, assistant dean of College of Business Anand Desai, head of Apparel, Textiles, and Interior Design Department Barbara Anderson, and head of the Management Department Chwen Sheu. Before this visit, K-State and School of Materials and Textiles of ZSTU have established initial cooperation. A memorandum of cooperation was signed by ZSTU president Qiu Songliang and K-State president Kirk Schulz. Members of the delegation conducted in-depth talks with leaders and professors from College of Human Ecology, College of Business, and College of Engineering on comprehensive cooperation between the two universities. The delegation was invited to the president’s home and attended a family party arranged by president’s wife. Meanwhile, the delegation also visited the textile preservation aboratory, art gallery, interior designing room, textile laboratory, and student dormitory of K-State. Two documents on specific cooperation with K-State were realized. Firstly, some professors and students of Apparel, Textile and Interior Designing Department will pay a short visit to ZSTU. Secondly, some College of Business professors will come to China and give lectures to ZSTU School of Economics and Management in the end of June. Details of cooperation will also be discussed by then.

On March 15th, the delegation visited SUNY-Oswego, which is located in Osweo, New York. The team was warmly received by school president Deborah Stanley, vice president Lorrie Clemo, International Department director Joshua McKeown, College of Liberal Arts assistant dean Richard Back, College of Communication, Media, and Arts dean Fritz Messere, College of Business assistant dean Glynn Eglish, Continuing Education Division director Thomas Ingram. SUNY-Oswego and ZSTU first established partnership in 2007, since when both sides have witnessed substantive in-depth cooperation. So far around 80 bachelor’s degrees of ZSTU have been delivered to SUNY-Oswego for short term, long term exchange programs and 2 plus 2 joint educating program. The objective of this delegation is to consolidate the present projects and develop more other cooperation. During the discussion the two sides exchanged ideas on the issue of one year or one term study of ZSTU Master’s degrees in SUNY-Oswego. Also discussed during the visit are the travel course programs for MBA candidates of ZSTU School of Economics and Management, joint postgraduate educating project of School of Sciences, and exchanging undergraduate students of School of Art and Design. Further discussion was also conducted on the possibility of joint education for students major in Media Art and some other majors.

The delegation arrived at Rouyn-Noranda of Quebec, Canada under a nasty weather, after twists and turns, on March 17th. The visit to the University of Quebec at Abitibi-Temiscamingue (UQAT) began the next morning. The delegation was warmly welcomed by the school president Johanne Jean, general secretary Martine Rioux, vice president Denis Martel, president assistant Pierre-Andre Belanger, head of New Media department Louis-Paul William, head of Engineering department Guyh Dituba Ngoma, head of Management department Michel Marsan, and senior professor Madam Chen Lizhen. The two parties exchanged brief introduction to the two campuses and conducted in-depth talks concerning exchange of students, joint educating program, exchange of teachers and visiting scholars, cooperative scientific research and other areas. UQAT, whose strength lies in media communication and television
animation, has established initial partnership with ZSTU School of Art and Design before. The delegation aimed to carry out specific cooperation with UQAT in such areas as joint educating program, communication and exchange program, and scientific research.

Cooperation with foreign universities is an important part of work for a university. In recent years, ZSTU witnessed rapid development in this area, thanks to the combined efforts from the school leaders, International Exchange & Cooperation Office, and the concerning colleges. So far ZSTU has established close partnership with 55 universities in 20 countries, the cooperation covering student exchange, joint educating program, cooperative school running, visiting scholars, faculty training, and scientific research. This delegation aimed to broaden and strengthen ZSTU communication and partnership with foreign institutes, and to develop more
cooperation possibilities with Canadian universities. During the visit Qiu Songliang required the representatives to play active roles in promoting practical cooperation with foreign universities for their perspective colleges. This visit is of significant importance for the ZSTU’s cause of globalization, and especially for its partnership projects with colleges in North America.
